Mending Noel Reviews and Branching Out!

NutcrackerHello all! Some of you may know that Mending Noel is my first little venture outside the realm of Historical. Even before I was published, I knew I didn't want to limit myself to just one genre. That said, I love Historical and have every intention of keeping up with those stories. In fact I'm working on them now! Johnnie, Remi, Danny, Bruce, and all the fellas are still eagerly awaiting their next books, while Julius's book is going through various stages of beta reading. There are certainly more to come.

I've been writing since I can remember. When I was a kid I'd make up my own characters, draw them, and write little stories to go with them. In high school I started my first novel. I didn't own a computer (few people did) so it was written across a bunch of journals. When I got my first computer in college, I rewrote it. I think I ended up rewriting it abut four times. Anyway, it was a Medieval fantasy of sorts. Let me tell you right now that I am rubbish at categorizing stories. I can't say my story is going to be this specific genre because it might have elements from various genres thrown in. Wherever the story wants to take me, providing I enjoy it, and it works, that's what I write. I like to make things different if I can, and I have a habit of ignoring the rules if I can find a new, interesting alternative. Mending Noel is one of those stories.

Even though I knew I was writing a sweet little story about elves at the North Pole, I wanted it to be different. I wanted to make up my own world using certain mythological beings from Christmas lore. It's fantasy but with a sort of urban twist because it takes place in a city, North Pole City, and like any other city, it can be dangerous. The enchanted creatures have jobs, there are misfits and outcasts, there's homophobia, drunkenness, scandal, and poverty. Don't get me wrong, it's not a gritty tale. I wanted something cheerful and cute for Christmas, but it does have a grittiness to it. Nothing is perfect, so I didn't want the North Pole to be either. Tim has a crappy job he hates, a supervisor who bullies him, and he's barely scraping by.

Brief Encounters has given it a wonderful 5 star review here, and the reviewer goes a little into the world I built, which was a real treat to read. For all of you who have enjoyed Mending Noel, for all the lovely ratings and reviews you've left, thank you so much. It really means a lot to me to know you've enjoyed my first non-historical title. I have a few more stories in the works that range anywhere from contemporary comedy/adventure to urban fantasy. I've been told Mending Noel still sounds distinctly me, which I couldn't be happier with. I have a certain style I suppose, and it'll be following me into whatever genre I venture into. Hope you're all ready for that ride!
