Recent Reads - A Change of Heart by Mary Calmes

RecentReads

Hello all! Welcome to another Recent Reads. This week I started the Change of Heart series by Mary Calmes. Truth be told, I can count on one hand the number of shifter books I've read, which I know may sound strange considering how many shifter stories I currently have published. Now that I'm catching up on my reading, I'm very much looking forward to reading the various takes on shifters in gay romance, so of course I started with one of my faves, Mary Calmes. From the very first chapter I was sucked into this world. I adore how creative it is, and am absolutely fascinated by the connection to ancient Egyptian culture and mythology.

The world building behind the werepanthers is wonderful, and so solidly put together. I love when there's just the right balance between the paranormal world and the real world, adding a fantastic layer of believability, even  where paranormal is concerned. There's a certain level of possessiveness and need which fits perfectly with this world. Logan is a mystery at first, this large, imposing sensual man determined to have what is rightfully his. I love the way Jin flusters him, drives him crazy.

Jin's fearful of this new life he's suddenly thrust into, and understandably so. I love his strength, how he always tries to see the good in people even if they've wronged him. I also love his friendship with Cane. I love Cane. That one person who knows Jin so well and can tell him off like no one can. I was enthralled by Jon and Logan's relationship, watching it grow from what they were to who they would be together as semel and reah. The secondary characters are wonderful and the more I read, the more I want to know about this world and the werepanther culture.

There is never a dull moment, with plenty of action, drama, thrills, and sexy-times, resulting in book hangovers over several mornings. Upon finishing I've quickly moved onto the second book Trusted Bond which was just as fabulous, and now I'm on Honored Vow but more on the rest of the series another day. Absolutely love it!

Change of Heart by Mary CalmesChange of Heart: Book One

As a young gay man—and a werepanther—all Jin Rayne yearns for is a normal life. Having fled his past, he wants nothing more than to start over, but Jin’s old life doesn’t want to let him go. When his travels bring him to a new city, he crosses paths with the leader of the local were-tribe. Logan Church is a shock and an enigma, and Jin fears that Logan is both the mate he fears and the love of his life. Jin doesn't want to go back to the old ways, and mating would irrevocably tie him to them.

But Jin is the mate Logan needs at his side to help him lead his tribe, and he won't give Jin up so easily. It will take time and trust for Jin to discover the joy in belonging to Logan and how to love without restraint.

Recent Reads - Marshals by Mary Calmes

RecentReads

Yes, I went on a Mary Calmes binge. Yes, I enjoyed every minute of it. After reading and loving the Matter of Time series, I went straight into the Marshals series. I really hope there are going to be more books in this series because they're just so good. I haven't read enough gay romance with Marshals so that was a delightful bonus. Ian Doyle made me swoon. The perfect combination of strong, and vulnerable. The sexual tension is amazing, but it was Ian's little gestures, the small intimate moments he initiated that had me giddy as a school girl. Moments like when he'd step up to Miro and put his head on Miro's shoulder. When he'd get in Miro's personal space, the questions he'd ask while poor Miro was oblivious.

There was action, suspense, romance, laugh out loud moments, and seriously hot sexy times. There were plenty of great characters in this book, those I loved and those I loved to hate. Miro was such a sweetheart. I felt for him, trying to keep his hotheaded partner out of trouble, but mostly the way he was crazy about Ian. I loved their partnership and their friendship almost as much as their romance. I couldn't get enough of these two.

<3 Happy reading!

All Kinds of Tied Down by Mary Calmes eBookMarshals: Book One

Deputy US Marshal Miro Jones has a reputation for being calm and collected under fire. These traits serve him well with his hotshot partner, Ian Doyle, the kind of guy who can start a fight in an empty room. In the past three years of their life-and-death job, they've gone from strangers to professional coworkers to devoted teammates and best friends. Miro’s cultivated blind faith in the man who has his back… faith and something more.

As a marshal and a soldier, Ian’s expected to lead. But the power and control that brings Ian success and fulfillment in the field isn't working anywhere else. Ian’s always resisted all kinds of tied down, but having no home—and no one to come home to—is slowly eating him up inside. Over time, Ian has grudgingly accepted that going anywhere without his partner simply doesn't work. Now Miro just has to convince him that getting tangled up in heartstrings isn't being tied down at all.

Fit to Be Tied by Mary Calmes eBook Marshals: Book Two

Deputy US Marshals Miro Jones and Ian Doyle are now partners on and off the job: Miro’s calm professionalism provides an ideal balance to Ian’s passion and quick temper. In a job where one misstep can be the difference between life and death, trust means everything. But every relationship has growing pains, and sometimes Miro stews about where he stands with his fiery lover. Could the heartstrings that so recently tied them together be in danger of unraveling?

Those new bonds are constantly challenged by family intrusions, well-intentioned friends, their personal insecurities, and their dangerous careers—including a trial by fire when an old case of Miro’s comes back to haunt them. It might just be enough to make Ian rethink his decision to let himself be tied down, and Miro can only hope the links they’ve forged will be strong enough to hold.

GRL Post & Giveaway Winners!

Hello all! I’m finally getting back into the swing of things after returning from my trip to San Diego. It always takes a few days to catch up, sort through all the emails, and compile the massive To-Do list before I start working my way through it. I couldn't hope to chronicle everything I did during that amazing week or this post would be ginormous. I had an amazing time at GRL in San Diego. It was so great to see old friends and meet new ones. There were folks I chat to online who were able to make it for the first time, so I got to put more faces to names and give them hugs. One of my lovely readers cosplayed as Dex from the THIRDS and I was just completely in awe. I never thought I’d see the day someone would dress up as one of my characters. I was just blown away, and I was gifted Dex’s name badge which was just the ultimate awesomeness.

Regina Dex cosplay

Getting to meet my readers was just the most wonderful experience. It always is. I was touched by everyone's love for these books. Regina—our cosplaying THIRDS Nerd—gifted me a 5lb bag of gummy bears which I munched during my signing and the rest I shared with folks--because we all know I would have eaten them otherwise. Mmm, gummy bears. I was also gifted this fabulous T-shirt by Cathy and Lindsey, which had me laughing often. Dex wants to steal it to bug Sloane with it but he can't have it.

Dex made it to the con in one piece and he was loving the attention. Ash will never hear the end of it. Thank you so much to the lovely ladies who volunteered to have me ship swag and poles to them and then carted all my swag to the hotel. I got to take a picture with the adorable Skip & Pip, and just swooned over my Dex & Sloane pony buttons made by the amazing Catherine Dair who I got to hang out with.

On Wednesday I went to San Diego and had a fabulous time with an amazing group of folks. I saw this fella soon as we walked in and knew I had to have a picture, especially since I’d dubbed him Ash.

Charlie Ash SDZoo

We got to ride a purple bus around the park which was so much fun. I felt like a kid drinking my lemonade ICEE—which was so good in the heat—and taking pictures with the gang in the photo op spots. We ate at the tastiest Mexican food restaurant after a trip to the Hotel del Coronado.

On Thursday the events began. I was a little nervous about my Q&A with awesome authors Rhys Ford and Lisa Henry. But when I sat down behind the mic, Rhys presented me with my little T-Rex friend, complete with flower and dinosaur sound effects—because Rhys is just amazing and I love her to bits—and I was just so happy and moved. The Q&A was fantastic. Not only did I have a great time chatting to folks about my books, but I got to listen to Rhys and Lisa talk about their stories, characters, and writing process.

T-Rex Love

On Friday I had some mouthwatering Korean Food with a fantastic group of folks over at the Zion Market before heading to Big Joy Family Inc where I was introduced to Vietnamese coffee A.K.A Nectar of the Gods. I got to hear Greg Tremblay read from some fabulous books by Rhys Ford, Mary Calmes, and Jamie Samms.

The events were fabulous and I had a wonderful time at everything from the panels, to the signing, to the parties. I got to dance along to songs from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, danced with the amazing Z.A. Maxfield—who didn’t recognized me in my costume. It was fun seeing folks not realize it was me in the white bob. MJ O'Shea did an amazing job with everyone's makeup. I was Mr. Freeze (Mrs. Freeze?) as part of the DC Villains costume collective. Everyone looked so amazing! My own mom didn't recognize me in the photo which says something. LOL. For more fabulous pics of the costume party, you can find them in my Facebook album here: https://www.facebook.com/charliecochet

Hollywood Party by Amy DiMartino400 I often get asked what my favorite part of GRL is, and I have to say it’s the people. As a full time writer, this is my career, but who says I can’t have fun while working? After all, I’m very lucky that I get to do what I love. Just meeting and hanging out with all these folks who love our genre is a gift. This is a place where you can be surrounded by like-minded people who have come together to celebrate this incredible genre, and I hope to never lose sight of that.

A big thank you to Barb and Mary Taylor who were always ready for a Starbucks run, always there to lend a helping hand, and are just the sweetest people. To my awesome roomie Kim Fielding, it's always a pleasure. To all the THIRDS Nerds and readers who came to see me, who said hello, asked for a hug or a photo, who chatted, brought cookies, laughed with me about Dex’s antics, who offered their support, or a shy smile, I thank you. I couldn’t have asked for a more amazing group. I am in awe of the love and support you’ve given me and my books.

To all my fellow authors and friends—too many to list here, but you know who you are—who have inspired me, supported me, offered me comfort and kindness, who’ve made me laugh, smile, and provided a steady stream of amazing hugs. To Poppy and Amy, my mama bears whose smiles alone brighten my day. I never feel lost when you're around. A thank you to my awesome publisher Dreamspinner who’s helped put me on this path. To everyone who hung out with me, who shared a little piece of their hearts with me.

Thank you to everyone, whether we met in person or chat virtually, I appreciate you being there. You’re all stars in the night sky shining bright, don’t let anyone make you feel less than radiant. <3
