#TeaserTuesday - 11/8/16 Soldati Hearts, Book #2

TeaserTuesday

Hello, all! This week’s #TeaserTuesday is actually supposed to be last week's #TeaserTuesday. I was out of town and had edits due and so it completely slipped my mind. I'll be sure to stay on top of it. Next week's will go up as scheduled. Here we have a snippet from the first chapter of my current work in progress, the second Soldati book, which is Toka and Rayner who appear in The Soldati Prince which is out November 21st from Dreamspinner Press and now available for pre-order from Amazon, ARe, and B&N as well. Enjoy!

When I catch you, you’ll have to give me anything I desire.

Toka wasn’t prepared for the silky words, and he faltered, his paw catching on a rock, sending him tumbling. Oh, sugar! He changed to his human form and sat up, eyes narrowed when a familiar shadow stretched over him. A hand appeared before his face, and with a groan, Toka accepted, slipping his smoky colored hand into the fairer one on offer. It was large and warm, enveloping Toka’s. Cheeks flushed, Toka was pulled to his feet.

“You cheated,” Toka mumbled pitifully.

Rayner’s amber eyes sparkled with mischief, his husky laugh sending a shiver through Toka. Why did the man have to be so darned handsome?

“Perhaps,” Rayner admitted, placing his hands to Toka’s waist as he edged closer then walking him back against a tree. He smelled wonderful. Of sandalwood, juniper, and cedar with something else mixed in, along with a scent unique to Rayner, one Toka would know anywhere.

“What… is it that you desire?” Toka’s breath hitched as the black of Rayner’s eyes spread, leaving slivers of molten amber. Rayner’s proximity was doing awfully naughty things to Toka’s body, especially when Rayner eliminated the distance between them, his knee between Toka’s legs.

“You’re trembling,” Rayner said, his sinful lips inches from Toka’s temple, and his breath hot against Toka’s skin. He brushed the back of his fingers down Toka’s bare arm before bringing them to rest under his chin, tilting his head back.

Oh, goodness. Toka swallowed hard. His eyes widened slightly, and his lips parted when Rayner dropped his gaze to Toka’s lips.

“What I desire, my little fox, is a kiss from those sweet lips.”

“Anything,” Toka breathed, curling his fingers into Rayner’s sleeves. He loved the way Rayner eclipsed Toka’s slighter frame. The breadth of his shoulders was impressive, leading to an expansive chest with muscular arms hidden beneath the billowy black sleeves from the shirt he wore beneath the chestnut colored jerkin. His thighs were powerful, his calves strong and sheathed in leather black boots. Rayner exuded more than strength, power, and confidence. He radiated an inescapable sensuality, one others couldn’t help but gravitate toward when he was close.

“You shouldn’t make such promises.” Rayner brushed his lips over Toka’s. “I have a very wicked imagination.”

Tokay whimpered, making Rayner chuckle. “You’re teasing me,” Toka said with a huff, turning his head away. Rayner took hold of his chin, and turned his head back to meet his gaze.

“Oh, but I’m very serious, my little fox.”

Around them the birds chirped and Riley smiled when he saw some squirrels playing. Soon some other furry little creatures joined in. A group of rabbits appeared, heading swiftly in the same direction. Did rabbits travel in packs?

“Um….” Riley caught up to Rayner. “Quick question.”

Khalon let out a heavy sigh. “Your questions are never quick. And here I thought I might have a moment’s peace.”

“Your charm continues to astound me,” Riley drawled before turning his attention back to Rayner. “Are the animals in this forest always in such a hurry?”

Rayner stopped. He sniffed the air and narrowed his eyes, peering into the woods. He turned and gave Adira a nod. She leaped into action, darting off into the woods while Ezra took off in a different direction. That didn’t bode well.

“What’s going on?” Riley asked, a chill spreading through him. He didn’t like this. Something was wrong. There was a distant roar and Rayner’s eyes widened. He grabbed Riley’s arm.

“Run!”

Before Riley could ask, the sun was swallowed in darkness, or so it seemed. A thick fog rolled into the woods all around them and Khalon pulled Riley between him and Rayner as they sped down the trail. The fog became so thick Riley couldn’t see what lay two feet ahead of him. He trusted Rayner and Khalon not to run him into a tree.

A horrifying shriek resounded before it multiplied into several more, followed by two familiar roars. Riley’s heart was ready to beat out of him. He didn’t need to be told what was behind them. The tattoos on his arm burned but he ignored it, too horrified by the noises coming from within the fog. He could barely see a thing, and as much as he hated to admit it, he was scared shitless. Whatever number of demons had shown up in the alley last night was nothing compared to what was after him now.

“Khalon, what’s happening?” Riley asked as he did his best to keep up with the warriors on either side of him. He really needed to lay off the cake. If he survived he’d have to remember to thank Tura for the boots because his sneakers—and feet—wouldn’t have survived the jagged rocks and harsh terrain of the woods. An icy wind whipped in his face and his lungs ached from his heavy breathing, but he continued to push himself, his boots kicking up dirt and pebbles as he raced down the path.

“There’s a village not far from here,” Khalon informed him. “Straight ahead. Whatever you do, don’t look back, and don’t stop.”

Despite what Khalon might think, Riley wasn’t an idiot. He had no intention of stopping until he either ran out of ground or collapsed from exhaustion. Amazing how the threat of being killed by demons unlocked a level of athleticism Riley never knew he had.

The noise intensified and the hairs on the back of his neck stood on end. Something was close. He could feel it. Like it was clawing at his soul. His chest got tight and it suddenly became harder to breathe. What the hell? Was he running out of steam already? He wasn’t that out of shape. His lungs burned and he felt dizzy. No, this was something else. His vision flickered, and when a strange pulse erupted from his chest, he got scared and cried out.

“Khalon!”

Riley didn’t know why he called Khalon’s name, but when the world around him spun off its axis, his vision growing dark and his legs giving out from under him, he was relieved and grateful Khalon was there to catch him.

#TeaserTuesday - 12/6/16 The Foxling Soldati (Soldati Hearts, Book 2)

TeaserTuesday

“You look ridiculous.”

Rayner blinked at Adira as she joined him in the corridor on the way to Khalon’s study. He smiled sweetly. “And a good morning to you, countess. Why am I ridiculous this time?”

“Don’t call me that,” she groused. “You’re smiling like an idiot.”

Rayner chuckled. “It’s good for the soul. Perhaps you should try it sometime.”

Adira released the most indelicate, unladylike snort. “The moment I start smiling like that, I’ll hang up my sword.  You and Khalon are worse than fledgling Soldati. One smile from those pretty boys, and you’re stumbling over yourselves.”

Rayner shrugged. “What’s wrong with smiling? Or pretty boys?”

“Nothing is wrong with either. Smiling is fine, in moderation. There are times I wonder if Khalon has lost his senses.”

“It’s called being in love, Adira.” Had his dear friend ever been in love? He couldn’t recall her ever speaking of it, much less displaying any signs of amorous affection toward any male or female Soldati, or anyone else for that matter. No, wait, there had been that one time during the Soldati Summer Solstice Festival where Rayner had spotted Adira tucked behind one of the tents kissing a stunning Soldati warrior with silky dark skin and the most incredible gold/green eyes he’d ever seen. What was her name? Fiorentina.

Adira’s eyebrows shot up near her hairline. “Are you telling me you’re in love?”

Rayner puckered his lips as if to kiss her. “Why? Would it make you jealous?”

“Not even if you were the last Soldati in the realm.” She narrowed her steel gray eyes at him. “Are you?”

“The last Soldati in the realm?”

Her exasperated sigh was music to his ears. “You exhaust me.”

“Did Fiorentina exhaust you?” He wriggled his eyebrows, and the scandalous expression that crossed her face was too much. Rayner threw his head back and laughed. Teasing Adira was always such fun. Not nearly as fun as aggravating the hell out of Khalon, but still quite fun.

#TeaserTuesday - 12/20/16 Thick & Thin (THIRDS, book 8)

TeaserTuesday Hello, all! This week’s Teaser Tuesday is a snippet from Thick & Thin, THIRDS Book 8 which is out February 1st, 2017! I'll be revealing the cover for Thick & Thin on Sinfully Gay Romance Book Reviews on January 2nd, 2017, plus there will be a giveaway! 2016Divider

“Run!” [Dex] took off, Calvin and Letty not questioning him. They sped down the debris and dirt-covered road as half a dozen Felid and wolf Therians gave chase. Up ahead, Sloane roared. Hobbs and Cael turned, heading back in their direction. They dashed past Dex, Calvin, and Letty, straight for the Therians chasing them. Dex glanced back long enough to see Cael speed around the Therians, confusing them, trying to trip them up, while Hobbs swatted at them, his razor-sharp claws extended. The two wolf Therians yelped, and dashed off. They weren’t going to face off against a tiger Therian.

Dex ran after his teammates into the building they suspected Juarez and Turner were hiding in. Ash and Sloane dove into a small group of charging Therians while Dex, Letty, and Calvin headed for the stairs. He hoped it could take their weight.

Calvin swiped up a big rock as he ran and hurled it at the stairs with all his strength. It bounced off and landed on the bare concrete floor. Letty went first, the stairs creaking under her weight. It held up fine. Calvin followed. Dex paused.

“Move your ass, Daley.” Calvin stopped at the top of the stairs, and Dex cursed under his breath. He sensed movement behind him and had no choice but to run up the stairs. Halfway up, his boots went through the hollow concrete of one step. Shit! He had nothing to hold on to, so he flailed. Calvin grabbed one arm and Letty the other. They pulled, groaning and grunting. Dex managed to pull his foot out, and they stopped to catch their breaths at the top. Well, Letty and Calvin did. Calvin eyed him but didn’t say a word. Letty on the other hand….

“What the fuck, Dex? What the hell are you carrying?”

“The usual,” Dex said, moving past them. “Come on.” He wasn’t about to get into it now. True, he was carrying just the usual, but his body mass had changed. Despite him looking more or less the same, he was heavier than a Human should be. Thankfully, his teammates let it go for now, and they continued upward until Dex smelled it—kind of like Sloane but different.

“Juarez.” Dex turned, his rifle aimed and ready as he slowly made his way down the ruins of what had once been an office building or something similar. The corridor had too many doorways for his liking.

“How do you know?” Letty asked.

“I just do.” Dex peeked into one of the rooms. “Clear.”

“Dex, it’s pitch-black in there. How the hell do you know it’s clear?” Calvin hissed.

“Because I do.” It might not be the answer his friends wanted to hear, but it was all he was giving them at the moment. “I’ll explain later, okay? Right now, we need to—” A high-pitched chirp caught his ear, and he straightened. “Cael.” Another distressed chirp and a hiss. Dex turned, and Calvin caught his arm.

“Dex?”

“Cael’s in trouble.”

“What? How the hell do you know?”

Couldn’t they hear him? Dex opened his mouth as a lion’s roar echoed through the building. Ash. It was Ash frustrated at not being able to get to Cael.

Calvin released Dex, his eyes wide. “When this is over, you’re going to tell us what the hell is going on.”

#TeaserTuesday - 1/3/17 Darkest Hour Before Dawn (THIRDS, Book 9)

TeaserTuesday

Hello, all! This week’s Teaser Tuesday is a snippet from Darkest Hour Before Dawn, THIRDS Book 9 which is Seb and Hudson's book due out at the end of April! Enjoy!

2016Divider

[Hudson] had a biscuit in each hand, and one between his teeth when he turned and almost ran into someone.

“Shooz me,” he mumbled around a mouthful of chocolatey goodness. A low grumble of a chuckle stilled him, and he looked up, eyes going wide.

“Caught red-handed, Lobito.” Seb peered at him, amusement lighting his eyes. “Does Dex know he’s put the Cookie Monster in charge of his cookies?”

Hudson wrinkled his nose since he couldn’t scoff. I don’t know what you’re talking about.

“I think you need to back away from the table, Dr. Colbourn. Back away slowly,” Seb teased, taking hold of the chocolate biscuit poking out of Hudson’s mouth. Hudson refused to release it, a low growl rising from his throat. This was his tasty treat. Seb tugged at it, and Hudson narrowed his eyes. Was the man seriously attempting to take a delicious morsel of food from him? He knew better.

Seb laughed. He snapped the biscuit, then popped it into his mouth. Hudson gasped around his remaining half of biscuit. The fiend! He cursed at Seb, who waggled his eyebrows as he chewed, then let out a decadent moan.

“That was so good.”

Hudson put his biscuits on the table and removed the one from his mouth to curse at Seb, but Seb snatched the remaining piece from his hand.

“Oh, you bastard!” Hudson made a grab for the biscuit, but Seb raised his arm high above his head. “You give me that back, you thief!”

“Technically, you thieved it first.”

Hudson latched on to Seb’s T-shirt with one hand to hold him in place, while stretching to reach his biscuit, except not even standing on his toes could he reach Seb’s palm.

“Why are you so blasted tall?” Hudson griped.

Seb laughed, throwing an arm around Hudson’s waist, and tucking him at his side to make it even harder.

“I don’t know. Why are you so adorable?”

“Flattery will get you nowhere,” Hudson said with a huff as he pushed at Seb’s arm. “Give me my biscuit!”

“Your what?”

“Piss off, Sebastian. It’s a biscuit.”

“It’s a cookie, and there’s a whole tray of them,” Seb said, motioning to the table, as if he didn’t already know Hudson’s reply.

“None of them are my biscuit.” It was ridiculous, but wolf Therians were very particular about what was theirs, and they did not like having their food thieved. Anyone who attempted to take food from his plate did so at their own risk.

“It’s not like I borrowed one of your DVDs and never gave it back.”

Hudson gasped in horror. “Don’t joke about such things.”

Seb threw his head back and laughed. At that moment, Ethan walked by, plucked the biscuit from Seb’s fingers, and tossed it in his mouth. Seb and Hudson protested simultaneously.

“Hey!”

Ethan waved a hand cheerfully before returning to the bar.

Hudson pouted miserably. “He ate my biscuit.”

“Half of it,” Seb corrected, patting his stomach. “I ate the other half.”

Hudson folded his arms over his chest and glared up at Seb accusingly. “He gets that from you, you know. Bloody biscuit thieves, the lot of you.”

#TeaserTuesday - 1/17/17 - Dreamspun Desires

Hello, all! This week’s Teaser Tuesday is a snippet from my current work in progress which is a new Dreamspun Desires book! Enjoy!

“I need you to help me with something.” Matthew felt his face burning up, and he cleared his throat as he opened his top desk drawer to pull out a small lined notepad.

“Of course.”

“It’s… kind of personal.”

“Whatever it is, Matthew, you know I’ll help.”

If he couldn’t trust Adam, who could he trust? They weren’t just colleagues, they were friends. They’d known each other for years. Adam had cried on Matthew's shoulder when his last boyfriend cheated on him and broke his heart into tiny pieces. The bastard. Matthew had been there to help Adam pick up the pieces, and when Matthew’s father had a heart attack, Adam was there to help Matthew from falling apart. Adam kept Hart & Home running without a glitch during Matthew’s absence while his father recovered.

“I know you’ll help,” Matthew replied, meeting Adam’s gaze. “It’s just a little…” Desperate? Embarrassing? “Private.”

“And you don’t think I can be discreet?” Adam arched a perfectly shaped eyebrow at him.

Matthew frowned. “Don’t be silly. There’s no one I trust more.”

“Okay then. Out with it.”

“I need you to….” Matthew shifted uncomfortably in his chair. His words almost a mumble when he spoke. “Get me a man.”

Adam nodded. He pursed his lips in thought. “Okay. How long do you want him for?”

The question caught Matthew off guard. “Well, I was kind of hoping… forever, or something along those lines?” Adam was more laid back about this than Matthew anticipated.

“Oh, you mean, like a mail order groom? I thought you just wanted an escort.”

“What?” Matthew gaped at his friend. “A what? Mail order—an escort? I don’t want either!” He threw a hand over his mouth when he realized how loud that had come out. He lowered his voice. “I meant a husband. I need you to help me find a husband. You know, introduce me to some guys that are looking to settle down, and maybe one of them might, I don’t know, want to settle down with me.”

Adam’s eyebrows shot up near his hairline. “You want to get married?”

“Why do you look so shocked?” Matthew wasn’t sure whether to feel insulted, or touched that Adam knew him so well. “When you thought I wanted a prostitute or a mail order groom you didn’t blink, but I tell you I want to get married and suddenly your eyebrows fly off your face.”

Adam’s expression turned deadpan. “Matthew, milk has a longer shelf life than the majority of your relationships.”

“Wow. Thanks.”

#TeaserTuesday - 2/7/17 The Foxling Soldati (Soldati Hearts, Book 2)

Hello, all! This week’s Teaser Tuesday is a snippet from Toka and Rayner's book, The Foxling Soldati which is book two in the Soldati Hearts series! Enjoy!

2016Divider

[Khalon] stood and stretched before leaning over to kiss the top of Riley’s head. “You must meet with Uburto regarding your ceremonial wardrobe for the evening of the banquet.”

Riley wrinkled his nose. “He’s going to drown me in layers again, isn’t he?”

Rayner held back a laugh at Riley’s pout. His princely ceremonial garb was a far cry from the T-shirts and jeans Riley had been accustomed to wearing when he first arrived in the Soldati realm. Come to think of it, any princely garb he wore was a far cry from his previous human wardrobe. During events that required Riley to wear more than his trousers and a simple jerkin over a shirt, Riley had a habit of discretely shedding pieces of his clothing as the evening went on, much to Rayner’s amusement, and Khalon’s befuddlement.

Khalon hadn’t quite known what to do the first time it happened. One moment Riley was dressed in various layers, including a regal cape, next moment he was in his trousers, and a thin royal tunic over his shirt. Rayner was quite certain the man hadn’t even worn a belt. The most fascinating part was that after the initial shock wore off, no one cared. They were all so charmed by Riley that the man’s lack of royal attire became no consequence, simply another quirk of the dashing Soldati Prince.

“I know,” Khalon said through a chuckle. “It’s not as if you’ll be wearing it for long.” He gave Riley a pointed look, but the sternness was gone the moment Riley’s cheeks went pink. Khalon realized what Riley had taken his words to mean, and coughed into his hand. “What I mean, is um, you tend to remove your clothes, um….”

“Not helping,” Riley muttered.

“Right. I’m going to go... do the things.” Khalon pointed to the door.

“Yeah, you go do the things,” Riley said, his lips pressed together as Khalon rounded his desk. Khalon narrowed his eyes at Rayner as he walked by.

“Oh, be quiet.”

Rayner suppressed a grin, and held his hands up in front of him. “I didn’t say anything.” Grumbling to himself, Khalon left the office, and Rayner fell back against the chair with a laugh. “The man is absolutely hopeless around you.”

Riley let out what sounded like a dreamy sigh. “Yeah, he’s something all right.”

“You two are adorable.”

Riley gave a sniff. “Now I know why he’s always telling you to be quiet.”

“A very noble attempt on his part,” Rayner teased.
