Recent Reads - The Last Enemy by Christian Beck

I admit it's been a while since I've read fiction outside the romance genre. Before I became a writer, I used to read a good deal of mystery, suspense, and crime. Christian Beck's book The Last Enemy (Agents of Influence Book 1) came recommended by a good friend. The way she described it had me so excited to get my hands on a copy, and when I received an ARC for it I jumped right in, and I had such a fantastic time reading it. This book was action-packed. It had me on the edge of my seat more times than I could count hoping that Monk, Ben, and the rest of their team made it out alive.

No punches are pulled in this book. We're talking espionage, Special Ops, betrayal, violence, and politics. Simon Monk is a highly trained spy in possession of deadly skills, skills that are put to the test as he tries to get to the bottom of an assassination in Cairo. Like Monk, I had no idea who to trust, so I trusted no one. Except for Ben. Army Captain Ben Namajunas kicks some serious butt. He's also the man in love with Simon. I really enjoyed the romance between Monk and Ben. It was very real, watching these two men together. Their profession doesn't leave much hope for a happily ever after, especially with everything Monk has been through, but there's always hope, and Christian did a wonderful job giving us that hope. If you enjoy action and suspense, with a great cast of characters, and an incredibly well written story, I highly recommend The Last Enemy.

Highly decorated Delta Force operator and Iraq war hero Simon Monk loses everything when his romantic partner defects to Beijing after being caught selling US secrets to Chinese Intelligence. Monk is drummed out of the Army from the blowback but gets a second chance at a career when he is recruited into a covert group within the CIA.

Years later Monk’s latest assignment sends him to Cairo, where the head of station has disappeared amid a highly publicized sex scandal. But things are not what they seem. When the base chief turns up dead and the Egyptian government looks the other way, Monk and his team hunt down the assassin.

All roads lead to a ruthless and lethal cult from Egypt’s ancient past who discard every unwritten rule of espionage to win. Monk is forced to take to the shadows to find and destroy his most dangerous adversaries yet, as a chain of events threatens to ignite war in the Middle East.

Recent Reads - Take Two by Shira Anthony

RecentReads

Hello, all! This week I had the pleasure of reading Shira Anthony's Take Two, a sweet story about second chances. I'm a sucker for a good romcom, and this played out in my head a la Hollywood movie style. I could see it up on the screen, the kind of movie where you'd get cozy with your fuzzy socks, super soft throw blanket, and your favorite beverage. Take Two tells the story of two men very much in love, but just like in real life, they've discovered that love alone is not enough to sustain a relationship or a marriage. Wesley and Sam have been married for ten years, getting together back before both their careers took off. Wesley is a professor, and Sam is a Hollywood star.

One of the things I love about this story is the way the author weaves in scenes of the couple throughout their relationship so you really start to see why Wesley filed for divorce, and your heart breaks for him. The way he just hung on, waiting for Sam, his heart clinging on to the moments he could spend with Sam, always being patient and understanding. I also loved that it wasn't just a matter of getting back together. Things had to change.

On the outside, Sam appears to be perfect. A sinfully handsome man who's charming, talented, and a true romantic, but the more we got to know Sam, the more we could see his flaws. Watching Wesley and Sam both grow, and learn, seeing them rediscover each other was just wonderful. Oh, and drunk Wesley is the best thing ever. Just saying. If you enjoy sweet romance, second chances, swashbuckling, humor, and suspense, I think you'll enjoy Take Two.

take-twoLights, camera, action! When Professor Wesley Coolidge accepts a summer job as a historical consultant to a pirate movie being filmed in North Carolina, the last person he expects to bump into is his soon-to-be ex, movie star Sander Carson.

Just like the flamboyant pirate he’s playing, Sander, aka Sam Carr, is used to getting what he wants, and he makes it clear he wants Wesley back in his life. Sam lost Wesley when he left their life in New York City behind for a career in Hollywood. But Wesley has finally managed to put the pieces of his heart back together, and he isn’t interested in Sam and Wesley: The Sequel.

Convincing Wesley to give their relationship a second chance will take much more than Sam’s apologies and reminders of good times past. If Sam wants Wesley back, he’ll have to show Wesley that they really can sail into the sunset together—a real-life happily-ever-after that won’t end once the final credits roll.
