Writerly Things & THIRDS Update

Hello all! I know blogging has been a little slow lately, but that's down to the THIRDS, and the way in which these guys have totally TAKEN OVER MY LIFE. I've received first edits for Hell & High Water (Book 1). Blood & Thunder (Book 2) is with my publisher and I hope to hear back soon. Rack & Ruin (Book 3) I'm currently working on, along with Rise & Fall (Book 4).

I've set myself some tough deadlines, but I'm really enjoying it. These fellas have crawled under my skin pretty quickly. After the 4 initial books,  there will be side stories with other pairings--the first, second, and third of which I've already added to my schedule, but I hope to write more Dex & Sloane, because their relationship should continue to grow beyond the 4 books. I've done artwork for the website which will launch as soon as I'm done with that, and have more solid info on Hell & High Water, like blurb and such. I created three logos which are the THIRDS organization logo (below), and the two patches the team wears on their uniforms, one being their squad's patch: Destructive Delta, and one being their law enforcement patch for their division, New York City. There will be plenty of swag with the logos. I'll be revealing the other two logos soon.

THIRDS logo 500px

So that's the THIRDS main logo displaying the organization's full name, motto, and in the center the representation of the unity between Therians and Humans. The motto itself translates to: With United Powers, which is what the THIRDS is all about: seeking justice for all, no matter the species, through the union of Human and Therian.

If you're not sure what Therians are, they're the shifters in the THIRDS series. In this world, shifters are not referred to as such, and instead they're a different species referred to as Therians-- which comes from Therianthropy: the change from human into animal.

For the THIRDS, I wanted to keep it as realistic as possible (for shifters anyway), and so the birth of this species is scientific rather than fantasy. And the THIRDS is an organization that was put in place to enforce the law, seek justice, and protect this new species, leaving Human law enforcement to deal with Human crimes, though since the two species aren't segregated, it means the THIRDS often have to deal with Human perpetrators if said Human commits a crime against a Therian citizen.

I'll be going more into the THIRDS, what it is, how they operate soon, but I loved putting this organization together, and it leaves loads of room for all kinds of stories, since there are three departments within the organization: Defense, Recon, and Intel. Each one has a different type of agent working for it, and these agents work in small squads with teams of two where a Human agent and Therian agent are paired up. Although the organization enforces the law, they're a military organization for the government, so it operates a little different to the Human police force. I'm happy to answer any questions related to the series, though if it's a spoiler, my answer may be somewhat vague.

Now onto other things. For anyone who doesn't know, I'll be attending RainbowCon at the end of April, and taking part in two panels: Thursday, April 17th 1 PM Marketing 101 Thursday, April 17th 4 - 4.30 PM Author Q&A Friday, April 18th 3 PM Roundtable Discussion  on Historicals

I have some wonderful folks with me for both these panels, and I'm really looking forward to it. If you're attending, make sure you say hello! If you're looking for a detailed schedule of events, you can find it here: http://rainbowconference.org/schedule.aspx

The M/M Romance group's writing event has arrived, and although I took part in the last two, I'm afraid I won't be able to this year as it falls during the wrapping up of Rise & Fall, and conflicts with my writing schedule for Vixen's Valor: Book 3 in the North Pole City Tales. I really want to make the North Pole City Tales a yearly Christmas thing, so I didn't want to skip this year, especially with quite a few folks looking forward to the next installment. Hopefully I can make the event next year, though I can't wait for all the great stories that are sure to come out of it this year!

And for those wondering when the heck I'm going to get to Hunter's book. He's on my writing schedule for this year, though it will mean the earliest the book will be released is early next year. Hunter's books is going to be a full length novel since we have quite a few characters, plus a couple of new ones. It'll be longer than An Intrepid Trip to Love, and I hope to release it through my lovely publisher so hopefully, it'll be worth the wait. I'm super grateful to everyone and their patience. <3

Survived My First Video Chat, plus GRL News!

CharlieRoseHello all! Phew! Well today was kind of a crazy day. First, I registered for GRL, and this year I'll be going as a Featured Author. Woot! I heard the slots went in like 3 minutes, which is pretty insane. I know some folks are upset they couldn't get in, but I hope it doesn't stop them from attending. I had an amazing time last year as a general attendee.

The last two years, I got to hang out with some amazing folks: readers, reviewers, photographers, artists, fellow authors, publishers, you name it. Last year I fangirled over other authors, participated in a lot of hugs, had a haunted beer with Jordan Castillo Price, and Jordan L. Hawk, got to meet my awesome author bud Michael Rupured in person--and helped him with his Fabio wig for the costume party. My roomies rocked, the events were such fun, and I'd do it all over again.

By the time GRL comes along, 3 out of 4 of my THIRDS series should  be out both in eBook and paperback, providing all goes according to schedule. A Rose By Any Other Name should be available by then in eBook and paperback as well, so this year I'll actually have books on the Dreamspinner Press table, not to mention have books to sign!!

The last few days I've been working on the THIRDS series website, including three custom logos: the THIRDS logo, and the two uniform patches the team wears. I'm SO excited with how they came out. *happy dance* I'll be slapping them on swag for sure! So there's a lot happening with this series, and I'll start revealing bits and pieces soon. Now, the second thing that happened today:

I survived my first video chat!! Well, I was incredibly nervous. You might be able to tell from my little bits of stumbling, but it was a great experience. Amy Lane, Rhys Ford, and Ariel Tachna were so fantastic. I really enjoyed myself, and hope to make it more of a regular thing. I'm trying to work my way up to *gulp* an author reading. Here's the video. Be gentle. (If you're reading this on Goodreads, the video won't show, but you can see it on my blog or on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_k55GHGzj4

THIRDS Update, Book Covers, and General Shenanigans

CharlieRoseHello all! The last few days I've been recuperating after (finally!) turning in Blood & Thunder, THIRDS Book 2 in to my publisher over the weekend (plus finishing a whole bunch of other things, -_-). I'm now working on Book 3, and trying to figure out what kind of covers I want for the series [cue ominous music]. Sometimes I know exactly what I want for a cover, and then other times I want to curl up, and weep.

There are so many options to consider before you even get to the content. Like drawn or photo? People or graphics? What kind of style? Then trying to figure out what I actually want on the cover. I've been going back and forth for days. Dreamspinner has an awesome art department with equally awesome artists, so that's not the problem. I've just kept drawing a blank. NOW I think I've got it. I think my problem was establishing a tone for the covers, because although it's a romance series, there's an equal balance of comedy and drama, and I want that to be reflected on the covers. I want the covers to stand out, so I think I may be taking a chance on the road less traveled with these, but hopefully it'll work.

I'm working on Rack & Ruin, THIRDS Book 3, plus working on production for Book 1. I think with each book I complete, the more nervous I get. I've never finished writing a whole series before the first book even gets close to release. I'm also working on the website, and hope to get that up before June.

Now for other news, Some of you may or may not know I did a guest post on Guy Like Romance, Too! where I shared links to Love in Bloom - A Chance & Jacky Valentine's Day Special. If you missed it, you can still read or download the story from my Free Reads page. http://www.charliecochet.com/free-reads/

As part of my newsletter, I'm including exclusive content for readers, and February's newsletter included The Perfect Valentine's Day - A Little Bit of Love Valentine's Day Special, featuring Trip & Boone. If you fancy signing up to my newsletter, you can do so here: http://www.charliecochet.com/newsletter If you signed up too late to get the Feb newsletter, just let me know you signed up, and would like Feb's newsletter (drop me an email or fill out the contact form) and I'll forward you a copy.

Don't forget, this weekend is my live chat with the fantabulous Amy Lane, and Rhys Ford. We'll be answering reader questions live on Google Hangouts. So drop by at 5 pm (Eastern Time), this Sat Feb 22nd to see if we answered your questions. I'll be posting the  direct link as soon as I get it.

There's still time to submit questions for any or all of us. Just leave them here, on Amy or Rhy's blog, or the Dreamspinner blog: http://dreamspinnerpress.com/blog/2014/02/10/fireside-chat-february-22/

Also, the rights to quite a few of my stories are reverting to me for my Torquere Press books, so they start becoming unavailable from the end of this month. When Love Walked In will become unavailable from around the 27th of Feb, and The Amethyst Cat Caper will become unavailable around the same time. I'm hoping to revisit all my short stories, though I haven't decided whether to make them longer, and re-release them, or put them together in an anthology. The Amethyst Cat Caper I intend to re-edit, and turn it into a full length novel, but obviously it won't be re-released until next year.

What do you think? Should I re-edit, extend them to novellas. Or re-edit, and put them together in a short story anthology with a new short story or two?

Welcome to the Power of Love Blog Hop!

Hello all! Welcome to The Power of Love Blog Hop! For many of you, it's still winter, so to warm up your Valentine's Day, I'm offering some heartwarming stories, and a chance to win some nifty prizes! Grab yourself a cup of cocoa, coffee, tea, whatever gives you that fuzzy, yummy feeling, and let's get started!

Ah, Valentine's Day. Love it or Loathe it, it's inescapable. Not even my fellas can get away from it. Personally, I'm a very low-key kinda gal. I prefer a cozy night in with some good food, great company, and a little fun. When it comes to Valentine's Day, I tend to approach it the way my character Trip from An Intrepid Trip to Love does: with caution, distrust, and one eye on the door, ready to make a break for it. Let me explain.

For my newsletter, I wrote a short story for my subscribers featuring characters they voted for. Trip won, so he and the love of his life, Boone, got their own Valentine's Day story. Like Trip, I was thinking of what sort of Valentine's Day gift Boone would like. I shopped around online, while Trip shopped around in his fictional greeting card stores. We browsed. And browsed. And browsed. And Oh. My. God. Well, Trip's horror reflects my own.

Aside the onslaught of merchandise, most places divide everything up into gifts for him, and gifts for her. The majority of gifts for her consisted of lingerie, roses, chocolate, jewelry, stuffed animals, and the racier gift like nipple tassels (O.o) or uh, edible underwear. The guys got jewelry, and underwear, sure, but they got iPods, and red Converse sneakers, and electronics, and strawberries dipped in chocolate made to look like footballs.

Now, I have nothing against chocolate (I live for it), and I wouldn't say no to some bling, but if I got a pair of red Converse sneakers from someone on Valentine's Day, I would be all over that. There's just so much stuff, it's overwhelming. On the plus side, there are some... disturbing gifts our there, which makes for not only entertaining viewing, but writing. Here are some interesting gifts I came across:

Sexy underwear doesn't do it for you? How about underwear for two?

UndiesForTwo

Or how about the Girlfriend Pillow?

Or for your lover of horror, how about this heart cake from Lil Vanilli?

Want to hold hands this winter, but those pesky gloves get in the way? Share a heart-shaped mitten!

If all else fails, nothing beats a good old fashioned greeting card.
